Video: Herculez Gomez sinks Sounders with a perfectly placed rebound

*     *     *

Here is video of the lone goal from Tuesday’s CONCACAF Champions League game, as forward Herculez Gomez gave Santos Laguna a 1-0 win in the first leg of a semifinal against Sounders FC.

The strike was perfectly placed in the top corner after Seattle goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann stopped a well-struck shot by Darwin Quintero.

Some reaction to the play:

“I was fortunate to get on the end of the rebound. That was pretty much all that happened. After that it was just a blur.” — Gomez

“The goal was difficult because it was a misplay from us in the back. So (Quintero) gets through and gets a shot, (Hahnemann) can’t hold it cleanly, and then we completely didn’t mark up on that side. Obviously Herculez then buried his opportunity.” — Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid

“I don’t know. It happened pretty fast actually. I saw the ball coming up, and then Zach (Scott) and Djimi (Traore) both went up for it, kind of collided and the ball bounced to their player. He was dribbling and I was tracking back. He shot and Marcus saved it, but Herculez got the rebound.” — Sounders FC defender DeAndre Yedlin.
