CCL teams 0-for-12 when losing the first leg of a two-game series at home

Sounders FC and the Los Angeles Galaxy face a tall task in advancing to the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League finals.

How tall? Well, no team in tournament history has ever advanced from a two-game series — play-in round, quarterfinals, semifinals or finals — after losing the first leg at home.

0 for 12.

Only two teams (Puerto Rico and Marathon in the 2010-11 CCL play-in round) have lost their home game in either leg and still advanced. It’s never happened in the later knockout rounds.

LA Galaxy lost 4-1 at home to Puerto Rico in prelims, lost 5-3 on aggregate
Tauro lost 3-0 at home to Marathon in prelims, lost 4-2 on aggregate
Toluca lost 1-0 at home to Monterrey in quarterfinals, lost 2-0 on aggregate

2011-12
Alianza lost 1-0 at home to FC Dallas in prelims, lost 2-0 on aggregate
Morelia lost 3-1 at home to Monterrey in quarterfinals, lost 7-2 on aggregate

2012-13
Xelaju lost 3-1 at home to Monterrey in quarterfinals, lost 4-2 on aggregate
Sounders FC lost 1-0 at home to Santos Laguna in semifinals… TBD
