Winless in MLS, but close to CCL finals (Monday links)

Seattle Sounders FC LogoSounders FC is the only winless team in MLS. A dubious distinction, to be sure, and one clinched when Chicago earned its first win of the season Sunday versus New York.

On the other hand, Seattle is only one result — albeit an extremely difficult one — from adding to the great accomplishments in league history by being the second MLS team to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League finals.

From last in MLS to potentially tops in the region. A strange mix in what has been an interesting 2013 so far.

Let’s get to some links:

*     *     *

— First off, difficult news out of New England, where defender Kevin Alston has been diagnosed with a rare but treatable form of leukemia. Remember, the Revs come to Seattle this weekend coming off a bye.

— I was on this podcast recently. And ex-Sounder Mike Seamon, if you want to hear how he’s doing, was on this podcast.

— New Seattle signing Philip Lund penned a blog post that gives a great picture of where he’s coming from.

— Around MLS, here’s a look at how many playoff teams in past seasons were in a playoff position early, TV ratings on NBC are up, and Philadelphia is getting an academy program.

— Also, Portland’s Ryan Johnson has been voted MLS Player of the Week, Montreal acquired a young midfielder on loan from Argentinos Juniors, and Nigel Reo-Coker‘s tackle in San Jose caught some attention across the pond.

— Here’s a video preview of Reign FC’s season from a local journalist. And The Equalizer is starting to compile all the NWSL rosters that are coming out before opening weekend.

— The Sounders Women and U-23s have partnered with ESPN Deportes Local Radio Group in a deal that includes the broadcast of select matches for both teams, plus weekly radio content, commercials, social media, and online branding.

— CONCACAF announced some changes to the Gold Cup, notably the 2013 and 2015 winners will face off to go to the 2017 Confederations Cup.

— The U.S. U-17s got off to a winning start in CONCACAF championships.

— USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann chatted with a few reporters about a number of topics last week. And might Kansas City become a formal training hub for the national team?

— In some cool local news, some big-time names in Italian soccer like Fabio Cannavaro, Massimo Ambrosini, Massimo Oddo and Alessandro Costacurta will be helping run a soccer camp with WestSound FC in Kitsap County. The camp for ages 8-15 will be held Aug. 5-9 at Bremerton Memorial Stadium and early registration runs until June 30.

— And speaking of Italians, here’s a pretty cool commercial here featuring USMNT star Michael Bradley and his AS Roma teammates…
