Sounders FC’s 0-3-2 slump is the longest winless streak to start an MLS season in franchise history. This we know.
But where does the five-game run rank in the longest winless streaks at any point within a season?
Here’s a look at Seattle’s worst:
9 games: 0-4-5, in 2012 (May 12 through July 4)
6 games: 0-1-5, in 2009 (May 2 through June 6)
5 games: 0-3-2, in 2013 (March 2 … current)
4 games: 0-2-2, in 2010 (April 22 through May 8)
4 games: 0-3-1, in 2010 (June 10 through July 11)
4 games: 0-2-2, in 2011 (March 15 through April 2)
And now for the other part. Four of the five other streaks noted above then turned into pretty decent unbeaten streaks immediately after.
The ones in 2012 and 2011 were followed by a 3-0-1 run.
That six-gamer in 2009 turned into a 3-0-3 stretch.
The first four-game winless streak in 2010 came during the season’s first-half struggles, so a 2-2 rebound is the least impressive of the group. But the bounce back after a similar slump later the year was easily the best at 5-0-1.
So the indication is that when the Sounders finally figure things out and break through for that first win, a nice spell of consistent success may follow.
