Sounders sign Will Bates, cut Andrew Duran

Bates mug 2013UPDATE 4:22 p.m. — The Sounders have confirmed the signing of Will Bates (right) and also announced that defender Andrew Duran, the team’s top pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, has been waived. Seattle’s roster remains at 29 (maximum: 30).

“Will is dangerous in the box and always plays hard,” said sporting director Chris Henderson in a news release. “He can score with both feet and with his head. He provides us with depth at forward and we are excited to have him in Seattle.”

Terms of the signing were not disclosed, but I’d expect he’s a minimum-salary, off-budget player.

Duran didn’t play an MLS game for the Sounders, as the team’s 2012 SuperDraft class (ex-forward Babayele Sodade was the other member) is already no more.

Bates had tweeted late Thursday afternoon that he has signed with the team.

The forward was selected in the first round of the supplemental draft in January but underwent knee surgery shortly thereafter, which delayed the evaluation process. The 22-year-old Virginia product eventually got healthy, was able to train and participate in Monday’s reserve game and earned himself a contract.
