Sounders FC U-23s advance to second round of U.S. Open Cup

usoc logoThe Sounders FC U-23s blasted Doxa Italia, 5-1, in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night in Sumner. Forward David Geno was the hero, scoring four goals in the rout. According to theCup.us, Geno is the 10th players to score at four goals in the modern era, since 1995, and the first from an amateur team.

The U-23s will face the Charlotte Eagles (USL PRO) in the second round at Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex in Charlotte, N.C.

“The Open Cup is an exciting competition for these players,” said Darren Sawatzky, U-23s coach and general manager, in a team release. “It gives them a chance to showcase their ability against professional players and we are looking forward to Tuesday’s game in Charlotte.”

Here is a list of all the results, with second-round pairings after the jump, as provided by U.S. Soccer. Third-round matchups, which will include scenarios for Sounders FC’s first game, will be made available later today.
