Reign FC loses to Portland on controversial penalty kick, falls to 0-7-1 on season
* * *
Reign FC, in front of a season-high crowd of 3,324, suffered a 1-0 home loss Saturday to Portland Thorns FC at Starfire Stadium.
The visitors scored the lone goal on an 83rd-minute penalty kick by Christine Sinclair. Though if you read reports from OregonLive.com and Cascadia Soccer Wire, nobody seems quite sure why the PK was called by referee Margaret Domka.
That is seven-straight losses for Seattle, which fell to 0-7-1, but the controversial call was the main story.
“The referees are a joke,” Reign coach Laura Harvey told reporters afterward.
“Portland didn’t earn the victory,” added goalkeeper Hope Solo, who made her season debut following wrist surgery in March, as seen in the previously linked reports. “That’s what’s most disappointing for our team. They didn’t earn it. Dubious call. Referee gives it up.”
Even Thorns coach Cindy Parlow Cone chimed in to reporters, more so on matters overall: “I think the people in green missed a good game tonight.”
Seattle, by all accounts, looked strong on the night, boasting a 19-13 advantage in shots (7-3 on goal) and 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. With Solo’s return and midfielder Keelin Winters in the lineup, the Reign actually had two U.S. women’s internationals on the field.
Portland improved to 6-1-1.
Watched replays over and over. Still doesn’t get clearer!!! I have a hard time with this one!! #confused
