MLS loses four teams, including Sounders FC, in U.S. Open Cup third round

The third round of the U.S. Open Cup kicked off Tuesday. This is the round when the 16 American teams in MLS enter the annual knockout-style tournament. It was a wild day of action, as is typical, and after the dust settled, two MLS sides were eliminated by lower-league competition.

The Colorado Rapids suffered a 3-1 road loss to Orlando City SC, a team in the third-tier USL PRO that beat the Sounders in a reserve game earlier this month.

The San Jose Earthquakes lost on the road, as well, a 1-0 defeat to the USL PRO Charleston Battery (the former team of Sounders like Osvaldo Alonso, Lamar Neagle and Alex Caskey).

The seven other MLS teams in action Tuesday advanced, but Real Salt Lake needed overtime and D.C. United needed penalty kicks. The third round comes to a close Wednesday with seven more games involving MLS teams.
