MLS All-Stars to face AS Roma on July 31 (Thursday links)

AS Roma LogoThe MLS All-Star Game opponent was announced Thursday, and it will be a top Italian club for the first time in AS Roma. The exhibition will be July 31 at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.

Roma, of course, features Italian legend Francesco Totti and American stalwart Michael Bradley.

Here were the previous All-Star Game opponents:

2003 — Chivas (W, 3-1)
2005 — Fulham (W, 4-1)
2006 — Chelsea (W, 1-0)
2007 — Celtic (W, 2-0)
2008 — West Ham (W, 3-2)
2009 — Everton (T, 1-1, lost in PKs)
2010 — Manchester United (L, 5-2)
2011 — Manchester United (L, 4-0)
2012 — Chelsea (W, 3-2)

Let’s get to some links:

*     *     *

— Chivas USA fired its head coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola late Thursday night. Newly appointed coach Jose Luis Real Casillas won’t arrive until Monday, according to a report, so youth development coach Sasha van der Most will serve in the interim for Saturday’s home game against Sounders FC.

— Around MLS, early reports are that FC Dallas is selling goalkeeper Richard Sanchez to Tigres but the team appears to be denying as much. Also, Toronto FC is denying talks with Carlos Tevez (that was silly anyway) and the Red Bulls signed another homegrown player.

Here is an obituary for Ron Davies, a member of the 1979 NASL Sounders.

— The Sounders Women got off to a winning start in the W-League with a 4-2 win against the L.A. Strikers in front of 816 fans.

— Sounders like Jose Mourinho to Chelsea should be official soon.

— Lastly, U.S. Soccer caught up with Hope Solo for an update on her progress…
