Sounders FC’s Sigi Schmid on the red card: ‘I’ll keep my opinion to (myself).’

I wasn’t in Los Angeles for Sounders FC’s road game Saturday against Chivas, but I was passed along some postgame audio from the team. Here are some of coach Sigi Schmid’s thoughts on the officiating by Ricardo Salazar and the decision to give a red card to Obafemi Martins:

* * *

(Asked about the red card…) “I’ve seen the replay. I have my opinion on the replay, and I’ll keep my opinion to (myself). … I don’t know. I’ve got no comment.”

(Asked why he doesn’t want to comment and whether it’s to avoid a fine…) “Sometimes you agree with calls. Sometimes you don’t agree with calls. And nobody cares what my opinion is.”

(When told by the reporters they care…) “The league doesn’t care what my opinion is and the referee doesn’t care what my opinion is. The thing I will say is in the NBA you foul out when you commit six fouls. When you have a player on the other team who is committing six, seven, eight fouls, you should foul out. He should be off the field. How he can stay on the field and get a yellow card after his seventh foul when you’ve got other players getting yellow cards after two was amazing to me.”

And here is a team-provided quote from Obafemi Martins…

* * *

(On his red card…) “It was the referee’s decision and there isn’t anything I can do about it. For me, I didn’t do anything. I was trying to get up and get the ball back. The midfield screamed and the referee looked at [Gabriel Farfan] and gave me the red card.”
