Sounders FC’s DeAndre Yedlin named to U.S. U-20 World Cup roster

yedlin mug 2013In what was no surprise in the end, Sounders FC defender DeAndre Yedlin was named to the U.S. U-20 roster Friday for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey from June 21 to July 13.

I asked Yedlin, a Seattle native, after Thursday’s practice if having two teams to focus on during his first year as a professional — club and country — has been difficult.

“Right now it’s more exciting,” he said. “It’s a little bit overwhelming, but it’s not a bad problem to have. It’s been fun.”

Coach Tab Ramos selected 21 players to his roster, though Sounders FC academy forward Jordan Morris, who had been called in the past few weeks for a training camp and youth tournament in France, did not make the list.

“Obviously it’s always difficult,” Ramos said of the selection process in a news release. “Wednesday night we were up till late selecting the final couple players. It’s always hard to let a player go who’s worked so hard to get here, and we know that we have 35 players who are deserving of going to the World Cup.”

In the group stage, the U.S. plays Spain (June 21, ESPN2, 10:45 p.m.), France (June 24, ESPN2, 7:45 a.m.) and Ghana (June 27, ESPNU, 9:45 p.m.).
