Video: Brad Evans scores dramatic winner for USMNT in Jamaica

UPDATE: Here are some player grades from ESPN.com, Soccer America, MLSsoccer.com and The New York Times. And here is an Evans-heavy recap from SI.com.

There probably couldn’t have been a more unlikely hero for the U.S. men’s national team.

Sounders FC’s Brad Evans, nearly an afterthought for the USMNT just a few weeks ago, scored the game-winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time Friday in Jamaica. The 2-1 road win (full highlights here) pushed the U.S. to 2-1-1 in the final round of World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF — tied at the top the standings with Costa Rica and Mexico on points.

“There was a short corner and Michael [Bradley] found me and I turned and just got the shot off as fast as I could,” Evans said on the beIN Sport broadcast. “I think it may have taken a deflection in but I’ll take it.”

It was Evans’ first international goal in his 10th international appearance. Have to imagine he’ll be starting again Tuesday against Panama as the road to the 2014 FIFA World Cup continues in front of his home fans.

“There’s still work to be done,” Evans told beIN. “I think we can do better at certain moments. I think everyone will tell you that from the top down. So there’s still work to be done but three points on the road in a place where we haven’t won in pretty special.”

“That never-say-die attitude is what got it done.”
