Getting set for USA-Panama (Monday links)

We’re counting down the hours to Tuesday’s big World Cup qualifier between the U.S. men’s national team and Panama at CenturyLink Field.

Note the change to kickoff above.

We had a couple preview stories in today’s paper, starting with this piece by Joel Petterson, who takes us back to the state of U.S. Soccer in 1976 when Seattle last hosted a World Cup qualifier. He’s got some extra anecdotes on the blog, plus I added a sidebar on Eddie Johnson‘s and Brad Evans‘ growing roles with the current national team.

Here are some Sunday practice reports from The Washington Post, MLSsoccer.com, American Soccer Now, where the big news was Jermaine Jones (concussion) ruling himself out on Twitter. Also, here are some pregame notes from the team.

Elsewhere, ProSoccerTalk says installing temporary grass was always a bad idea.

Let’s get to some links:

The rumor mill has the Sounders possibly interested in Inter Milan’s Dejan Stankovic.

Eddie Johnson was on Q13 FOX last night, and here are six minutes of quality footage of Saturday’s game from LEVYFilms.

— Around MLS, San Jose has shockingly parted ways with coach Frank Yallop.

— On the local scene, the Sounders Women were winners recently while the Sounders U-23s lost to the rival Timbers. Also, here’s a piece on academy forward Jordan Morris, who just missed the cut for the U.S. U-20 World Cup team.

— Here’s a fun local story of a kid on a bike leading a lost coach to a soccer field.

— Lastly, an own goal you just have to see to believe (passed along by our good friend John Boyle of The Herald in Everett)…
