Sounders FC’s Steve Zakuani, as expected, underwent surgery for a sports hernia Tuesday. The team confirmed Wednesday that the procedure, performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia, was “successful” and went as scheduled.
Coach Sigi Schmid had told us a while back that expected rehabilitation time is six to eight weeks before the midfielder can get back on the field.
Zakuani came into the 2013 season not long after a 15-month recovery from a broken leg and related complications.
Here is some more information from the team:
Zakuani, 25, has started six games in league play this season, recording one assist. His last appearance was on April 20 at Colorado. Zakuani has nine appearances across all competitions in 2013, and assisted on the deciding goal in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. Overall, he has started 67 of 78 appearances in his five-year MLS career and is the club’s third-leading scorer with 17 goals.
The Sounders have a bye this weekend and return to action with a June 22 road game at Real Salt Lake.
