West race tightens up (Thursday links)
The MLSsoccer.com standings (shown above) have the Sounders below the line in the playoff chase after Wednesday’s round of games.
Be sure to check out all the goals from yesterday’s action.
Obviously Seattle has played fewer games than everyone else in the conference and has a higher points-per-game average than all but three teams, but it’s an early indication that the race for five postseason berths could be a tight one.
Any thoughts? Let’s get to some links…
* * *
— First off, Twitter voting for the MLS All-Star Game opened this morning.
— Reports are that a Portuguese team could be interested in on-loan forward Fredy Montero. I’d expect his name will be a popular one in the rumor mill, as always.
— Brad Evans was on KJR Wednesday upon his return from national team duty.
— SI.com caught up with U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati for a number of topics, including when the team could be returning to Seattle.
— Around MLS, Philadelphia signed a new goalkeeper, a bunch of guys were suspended for action over the weekend, the Timbers were profiled by USA Today, ex-Sounder Pete Vagenas has been named the Galaxy’s youth academy director, and the league announced some changes to the front office.
— In some rumors, former Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop has been linked to the Canada job, Orlando City is apparently claiming it will sign Kaka if it is allowed to join MLS, and the Deco-to-Columbus link was on and then off again very quickly.
— Around the world of soccer, did you see an NFL team reportedly had offered David Beckham a tryout as a kicker? Here is a sneak peek of a Sounders book coming out later this year. And a couple international signings worth noting: American Eric Lichaj has signed with Nottingham Forest and Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain looks set to join Arsenal.
— In the NWSL, here are the latest power rankings from the league website.
— Lastly, Mario Martinez indicated on Twitter that an announcement on his future could be coming soon (previous indications have been that he’ll be staying with the Sounders after his loan deal expires at the end of the month)…
Ya en Seattle y Esperar que pasara con mi futuro??
