Sounders FC’s Chris Henderson on transfer window, Mario Martinez and David Navarro

henderson mug 2012Reporters had a chance to catch up with Sounders FC sporting director Chris Henderson after Tuesday’s practice (and he’s a busy man who’s getting married later this week). Part of the interview was about the summer transfer window that opens July 9, negotiations to bring back Mario Martinez, and the team’s interest in Levante UD defender David Navarro:

*     *     *

(What’s the approach with the summer transfer window opening in two weeks knowing you already have three DPs and not a lot of cap room?) “I think we go out, and we’re always looking, but now as it starts to get closer, we’re looking at some specific positions. And we’d have to make some moves in order to do it, so those are conversations we have — whether it’s going to be right for the team and right for us to try and make a push to improve the team in the window. It’s all timing. It’s timing with the players, but for us, we’re at least looking. We look at multiple positions, but there are a few, and usually key positions are up the spine for teams where impact players can come in. So those conversations are going on. (Assistant coach and scout Kurt Schmid) has been overseas. I went to Europe a went few weeks ago and then South America just recently.”

(How does Mario Martinez fit inside that puzzle?) “Mario, that’ll be a player that we’re negotiating with now. A decision will be made in the next five days with him. And I think those are ongoing negotiations, so we’ll have a decision shortly on him.”

(Is the negotiation mainly with Sounders and Real Espana? Or is Mario involved?) “Mario, his agent, the club and the Sounders. I think everyone’s kind of involved in it. It’s his future, and obviously when people loan a player, then they’re involved. So we’ll know more in the next few days.”

(Have you been happy with how negotiations have gone so far?) “I don’t really want to see one way or the other.”

(You’ve been linked to Levante UD defender David Navarro. What can you say about your interest in him?) “Yeah, David’s a good player. He’s a guy we watched several times play because he was teammates with (Obafemi Martins). He’s a move I don’t know if we’re going to be able to make or not, but I think he’s a player who’d do well in MLS.”
