Reign breaks through for first win of season

reign fc alternateThe wait is finally over.

Reign FC won its first NWSL game Wednesday, beating the Boston Breakers, 2-1, on the road. Christine Nairn scored the winner in the 86th minute for Seattle (1-9-2) on an assist from forward Liz Bogus.

“We feel that we’ve got something special in Seattle, and we’ve been waiting to show people what that is,” coach Laura Harvey told EqualizerSoccer.com. “Hopefully now we can keep up from tonight and show exactly who we are.”

Jess Fishlock had tied the game in the 78th minute, canceling out an opener by Boston’s Mariah Nogueira in the 51st minute.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo made six saves for the Reign, who had fewer shots (18-24) and corner kicks (1-9) than the hosts. Seattle had earned a 1-1 road tie at Western New York in its previous game, coinciding with the debut of U.S. national team star Megan Rapinoe.

The Breakers (3-5-3) are winless in their last five, including four losses.

The Reign returns to action Saturday at home against the Chicago Red Stars, a 8 p.m. game at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila that is setting up to be Rapinoe’s home debut.
