Sounders FC has waived defender Ashani Fairclough, a move that became expected following this tweet from the former Jamaican youth international.
Fairclough also wasn’t at Thursday’s practice before the announcement of this transaction. Here is some information from the news release:
Fairclough, 20, was signed by Sounders FC on March 22, 2013. He logged 214 minutes in four appearances in the MLS Reserve League. Before joining Sounders FC, Fairclough made 73 appearances for the University of South Florida from 2009-12, totaling one goal and 10 assists. He was the captain of the 2007-08 Jamaican U-17 National Team and was the youngest player on the U-20 team. Fairclough originally joined Sounders FC in the 2013 preseason.
The biggest takeaway from the move is Seattle freed up an international roster slot by releasing Fairclough. The Sounders have seven in total after trading one to Montreal in preseason for the rights to Federal Way native Lamar Neagle. Other internationals include forward Obafemi Martins, defender Djimi Traore, and midfielders Andy Rose and Philip Lund.
Mario Martinez also counts as an international player, but we’re waiting to see if he’ll stay with Seattle after his initial loan deal ends Sunday.
