A Panamanian report has pulled a post on Twitter, apparently from a representative of Sounders FC trialist Roberto Chen, as saying only details remain regarding a potential signing.
Chen, in the past week or so, has certainly come to look like a prime candidate for an addition during the summer transfer window. Coach Sigi Schmid said Monday that the 19-year-old center back has “done well since he’s been here in training, so we’ll have to see how it goes from there. The Sounders have a few open international roster slots, particularly after the release of defender Ashani Fairclough.
Chen left Seattle on Monday to join up with Panama’s national team for the Gold Cup (they play Martinique at CenturyLink Field on July 11). He played against the Sounders as a young 17 year old in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League with Panama’s San Francisco FC.
“We’ve had an eye on him,” Schmid said. “We liked him then at that age, and obviously he did his ACL in between that, so he had to recover from there. In the interim, we’ve been waiting for him to heal and try to get him back up here so we could have a look at him. It was good for us to get a look at him and get to know him as a person.”
