Based on the updates the past few weeks, it was no surprise that there was no Sounders FC representation on the MLS All-Star Game Fan XI, as announced Sunday.
Seattle didn’t have any leaders throughout the fan voting online and through texting and Twitter.
The MLS All-Stars will face Italian club AS Roma on July 31 at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. (6 p.m. on ESPN2).
An 11th player in the Fan XI will be added in a way you have to read to believe. From an MLS news release: “The 11th player – a forward – on the Fan XI will be decided July 11, as part of the innovative AT&T MLS All-Star ‘In the Game’ Challenge. Among the remaining forwards on the ballot, the player with whom fans score the most goals in FIFA Soccer 13, with one goal equaling one vote, from July 3-July 10 will be named to the Fan XI.”
The Fan XI isn’t binding as a starting lineup or even as players available on the 18-man gameday roster. That will be determined by coach Peter Vermes after a full squad is announced July 15 (along with two picks from MLS commissioner Don Garber). Under the collective bargaining agreement, a total of 32 players will get All-Star status (though 14 will be inactive).
