Here is the highlight of the final goal from the U.S. men’s national team’s 6-1 win against Belize in its CONCACAF Gold Cup opener Tuesday in Portland (I’ll update with full highlights when available). It was the first ever meeting between the two countries.
Some key notes, Chris Wondolowski scored a hat trick (and had his last name misspelled as “Wondowlowski” on his jersey, Landon Donovan became the first player in USMNT history to reach 50 goals and 50 assists (he’s actually at 52 and 51, respectively), and Norwegian-born Mix Diskerud is now cap tied to the U.S.
Wondolowski is the third player in federation history with a hat trick in the Gold Cup, 15th in all competitions. Reporters noted Oguchi Onyewu, Herculez Gomez and Stuart Holden (who scored off the bench) had reduced roles since they have recent injury history and the game was played on artificial turf.
Elsewhere in the Group C, Costa Rica beat Cuba, 3-0, on Tuesday
The U.S. plays next against Cuba at 12:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
