Reign FC keeps rolling with win in front of sellout crowd, national TV audience

reign fc alternateIt a big night for Reign FC on Sunday, particularly with FOX Soccer in town for the first national broadcast of the NWSL season.

Starfire Stadium was sold out, too, with a season-high 3,855 fans.

Seattle didn’t disappoint, coming back from early deficit to beat the Washington Spirit, 2-1, to extend an unbeaten streak to six. Jessica McDonald, the younger sister of D.C. United’s Brandon McDonald, scored both goals after only recently being acquired off waivers.

Washington (1-9-5) scored first on an 11th-penalty kick by midfielder Diana Matheson. It was the league-leading fifth PK allowed by the Reign.

But the hosts bounced back through McDonald, who scored in the 30th and 33rd minutes to give Seattle (4-9-3) its fourth win in six games. Christine Nairn had the assist on the first goal; she’s had a goal or assist in five-straight games. Elli Reed provided the cross on the second for her second-straight game with a helper.

Australian international Emily Van Egmond, another recent acquisition, made her NWSL debut in the 80th minute for the Reign.

Seattle is still nine points out of a playoff position with six games to play. The team heads to FC Kansas City for a road game Saturday.
