MLS announced its 20-man gameday roster for the July 31 All-Star Game against Italian club AS Roma, and Sounders FC defender DeAndre Yedlin made the list.
The 20-year-old Seattle native is the first rookie since 2005 to be available for the MLS All-Stars (Michael Parkhurst, New England). Yedlin is the only homegrown player on the team (only the second to ever to be available for an ASG: Juan Agudelo, 2011) and was named to the squad as one of two picks by commissioner Don Garber.
It has been a big year for Yedlin, even outside of starting 13 of his 14 MLS games here in Seattle. He just recently got back from representing the U.S. in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, and I’ll have more from an interview with him later in the day.
It is uncertain if Yedlin will miss time with the Sounders, who play at home July 28 vs. Chivas USA and then Aug. 3 vs. FC Dallas. The All-Star Game is being played at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.
Other Sounders could still earn the All-Star designation, but they would be inactive for the game.
The team’s previous All-Stars include: Osvaldo Alonso (2011-12), Eddie Johnson (2012), Kasey Keller (2009-2011), Fredy Montero (2009-10, 2012), Freddie Ljungberg (2009-10) and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado (2009).
Here is a look at the gameday roster, including all 11 Fan XI picks, nine first-time All-Stars and 12 of 19 teams represented:
