Catching up with former Sounders FC goalkeeper Bryan Meredith

meredith trainingFormer Sounders FC goalkeeper Bryan Meredith was a newcomer at practice Tuesday. The 23-year-old had been playing the last six months or so with IK Brage of the Swedish second division.

While he’s no longer under contract, Meredith is mainly here as an invitee, not someone the Sounders are looking to sign right away. Coach Sigi Schmid mentioned the possibility of Meredith going to play at Phoenix FC, which needs a goalkeeper, particularly after loaning Andrew Weber here.

Anyways, here is a transcript of our short interview with Meredith:

*     *     *

(How did this come about?) “Well, I was actually at home. We have a little international break. I was at home for a couple days and kind of just decided that I didn’t want to go back to my old club. It didn’t really work out too much. So I was just looking for a place to train and stay fit.”

(So are you under contract with anyone?) “No.”

(How was the experience of being over there, even if the playing part of it didn’t so well?) “Being over there, there are parts that were nice. Stockholm was beautiful. The town I lived in was not, to say the least. But it was good to experience the culture, and a lot of guys on the team were great guys. Get experience. Get new friends. Learn new things.”

(What’s the league like?) “Up and down, really. It’s pretty competitive. It’s kind of like here, where every year the bottom team could be the top team at the end of the year, so everybody is really competitive. Obviously the level isn’t as high as MLS, but it’s still a pretty decent level.”

(What have you made of the GK injuries here?) “It’s unfortunate. Hopefully they can get back fit quickly and back into games. Weber’s here to step in for them. Hopefully we can do the job and get a couple wins.”

(Are you hoping to sign here?) “It would be nice to, obviously. I love the club, love the city. I don’t know if that’s even an option. I’m just here looking to stay fit and stay sharp.”

(Was it just like riding a bike coming back and training with your old club?) “It’s awesome to come back and see all the guys again. It’s great to see everybody really, so yeah, I kind of feel like I just got back in.”

(Even with Coach Kasey back there?) “(laughs) Yeah, of course.”
