Saturday wasn’t a good day for Reign FC.
The NWSL team was officially eliminated from the playoff race early in the day and then lost on the road, 3-1, to the Chicago Red Stars. Seattle, of course, was always a postseason longshot after an 11-game winless streak to start the year, including nine losses.
The Red Stars (7-7-5) got two goals from forward Inka Grings and a penalty kick from Sonja Fuss to earn the win. Believe it or not, Seattle has faced a league-leading seven PKs this season.
Kaylyn Kyle scored her third goal of the season, also a PK, for the Reign’s lone tally.
Seattle (5-11-3) was knocked out of the playoffs earlier Saturday when the Western New York Flash came back from a two-goal deficit to tie Boston, and the point was enough to eliminate the the Reign.
Up next is a road game Wednesday against the Flash followed by a road game against the Washington Spirit on Saturday — a 4 p.m. game that will be broadcast on FOX Soccer. Seattle plays its final home game of the season on Aug. 17 against rival Portland.
