Sounders grab Cascadia Cup lead and could clinch trophy with win next game

The Sounders jumped into the Cascadia Cup lead with a 1-0 home win against the Timbers, who currently hold the trophy. A record crowd of 67,385 showed up Sunday at CenturyLink Field for the spectacle.

Regardless of the all the other results, Seattle would clinch the competition with an Oct. 9 win against the Vancouver. That would give the Sounders 10 points, which couldn’t be matched by either of the Pacific Northwest rivals.

The next game is between the Timbers and Whitecaps on Oct. 6 at BC Place, and Portland has to win to stay alive.

Each team has two games remaining, one home and one away. We have to wait until October until the next one, however.

Here is a look at the updated schedule, results and standings:

Seattle Sounders FC — 2-1-1 (7 pts.) 0 GD, five goals scored
Vancouver Whitecaps — 1-1-2 (5 pts.), +1 GD, seven goals scored

Portland Timbers — 0-1-3 (3 pts.), -1 GD, four goals scored
