Another week, another leap in the Western Conference standings for Sounders FC.
And Saturday’s 1-0 road win in Columbus has vaulted Seattle into third place, the team’s highest position this season. The Sounders had been as high as fourth after a June 8 win over Vancouver, but soon dropped back down.
It was always an uphill battle after a franchise-worst start had the Sounders in last place until the second week of May. Just in the past two games, though, the team has jumped from sixth in the West to a tie for fifth and then to third. Five wins in six games overall has its rewards.
Games in hand will allow Seattle to jump even higher, and the schedule is looking quite favorable (even if some personnel issues are not with suspension, injuries and international call-ups). Four of the next five are at home, when the Sounders are riding a 10-game unbeaten streak:
Sept. 4 — vs. Chivas USA
Sept. 7 — vs. Chicago
Sept. 13 — vs. Real Salt Lake
Sept. 21 — at Los Angeles
Sept. 29 — vs. New York
