Going into the second week of September, Lamar Neagle is Sounders FC’s co-leading scorer.
Did anyone see that coming? Did Neagle?
“Not at all,” the Federal Way native said. “I think even if you had told me how many minutes I’d have up to now I would’ve laughed in your face. … There is no way I could’ve seen this happening.”
Neagle’s seven goals, a personal best, are tied for the team lead with Obafemi Martins and Eddie Johnson. Of course, Martins’ season has been hampered by injury and Johnson has been in and out with the national team, but that doesn’t take anything away from Neagle’s career year, and it had me thinking:
Who has been the team’s biggest surprise this season?
Neagle is a leading candidate having set career highs in goals (7), goals in all competitions (8), assists (3) and points (17). He’s 12 career goals are also up to sixth in team history.
Another option would be DeAndre Yedlin, who won the starting job at right back at 19 years old having just signed as a homegrown player. He was also an MLS All-Star as a commissioner’s pick and has many hoping he’s on the fast track to the U.S. men’s national team.
I would consider Djimi Traore as another possibility after earning a starting spot upon signing midway through preseason and being arguably the team’s best defender all year. Others that deserve consideration are Marc Burch (who has matched a career high with three assists, all his last four games) and Brad Evans (who has emerged as an indispensable player here and a starter with the USMNT).
So what do you think?
