Sounders have climbed to the top of the West, but there is still a lot of season left
From the bottom to the top, both in the Western Conference (seen above) and the Supporters’ Shield race (available here).
It took a little more than five months, but Sounders FC’s long climb has reached a peak, capped by Friday’s 2-0 home win against Real Salt Lake. Crazy to think Seattle was out a playoff position less than a month ago, but first place is the reward of five straight wins and eight wins in nine.
The Sounders’ magic number for a playoff berth is 10 points as 59 would be enough no matter the results of the other teams.
Nothing, of course, has been won yet, and there is still a ways to go. The next game is Saturday against the two-time champion Los Angeles Galaxy, though a couple things are already working in Seattle’s favor.
The Galaxy will be playing a CONCACAF Champions League game at home Wednesday and the team also sustained a couple injuries to Landon Donovan and A.J. DeLaGarza in Saturday’s tie against D.C. United.
Here is a look at the Sounders’ next five games:
Sept. 21 — at LA Galaxy
Sept. 29 — vs. New York
Oct. 5 — at Colorado
Oct. 9 — vs. Vancouver
Oct. 13 — at Portland
