Sounders FC vs. N.Y. Red Bulls, pregame
Welcome back to CenturyLink Field, where the stadium crew has done a great job turning this back into a soccer field after last night’s WSU-Stanford college football game.
There is some nasty weather expected, but so far the rain and wind look at least manageable.
The Sounders have won six straight home games at this stadium as part of a 10-0-3 unbeaten streak here since the season opener. The Red Bulls have been hot, too, having won their last four games.
The big question for Seattle involves the availability of star Clint Dempsey, who suffered a hamstring injury about 10 days ago. At best, he’ll be on the bench, according to coach Sigi Schmid. New York, as has been mentioned before, aren’t expected to have Thierry Henry and Jamison Olave available due to concerns over the artificial turf.
Either way, the top teams in MLS going into October will come from this game (New York with a win or tie, the Sounders with a win).
Also here are some updated playoff scenarios: New York clinches with a win; Seattle clinches with a win and an FC Dallas loss or tie against Columbus.
I’ll post lineups here when they become available.
Sounders FC lineup: GK Michael Gspurning, D DeAndre Yedlin, D Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, D Djimi Traore, D Marc Burch, M Mauro Rosales, M Osvaldo Alonso, M Brad Evans, M Lamar Neagle, F Eddie Johnson, F Obafemi Martins
Sounders FC bench: GK Marcus Hahnemann, D Patrick Ianni, D Dylan Remick, M Adam Moffat, M Andy Rose, M Steve Zakuani, F/M David Estrada
New York lineup: GK Luis Robles; D Kosuke Kimura, D Markus Holgersson, D Ibrahim Sekagya, D David Carney; M Lloyd Sam, M Tim Cahill, M Dax McCarty, M Johnny Steele, F Fabian Espindola, F Peguy Luyindula
New York bench: GK Ryan Meara, M Brandon Barklage, D Matt Miazga, M Eric Alexander, M Marius Obekop, F Andre Akpan, M Michael Bustamante
NOTES: This is Seattle’s 33rd lineup in 34 games. Clint Dempsey (hamstring) and Leo Gonzalez (groin) are unavailable. Marc Burch fills in at left back for his first start there March 30. Djimi Traore is back in for the suspended Zach Scott. Steve Zakuani makes his second straight appearance on the bench.
