UPDATE 2:20 p.m. — According to MLS, the only way for the Sounders to clinch a playoff berth this week is to beat the Rapids. So as of now, it appears there isn’t a scenario Seattle can advance with a tie and help.
* * *
It’s no secret Sunday wasn’t the best display from Sounders FC, and a 1-1 tie allowed Real Salt Lake to close the gap on points in the Western Conference over the weekend.
Seattle still has games in hand, of course, and maintained the league’s best points-per-game average. Over in the East (full standings here), New York has 52 points but a 1.68 PPG having also played two more games than the Sounders.
So what’s next?
Well, that would be clinching a playoff berth, something both teams at CenturyLink Field could have done with a win.
Here is how Seattle can do it:
— Beat Colorado on Saturday. Plain and simple.
I’m sure there are other complicated scenarios, and I’ll try to figure them out this week. The league will also send out some scenarios this week, but even those needed some revision recently in the Sounders case.
In some other notes, 62 points would clinch the Supporters’ Shield for Seattle and 58 points would clinch a top-three finish in the West (avoiding the postseason play-in round between the No. 4 and 5 seeds).
Any thoughts on where the Sounders sit after Sunday’s tie?
