Sounders FC’s Clint Dempsey will not be traveling with the team for Saturday’s road game against the Colorado Rapids, according to coach Sigi Schmid.
That means the forward/midfielder will miss his third straight game while recovering from a hamstring injury.
“He’s making progress, he’s getting better, but for him to travel at this stage is probably still a little early,” Schmid said after Friday’s practice.
There are, of course, ramifications regarding the U.S. men’s national team as World Cup qualifying is set to resume next week. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann had expected Dempsey, his captain, to join training camp, but that was under the expectation that the 30-year-old would be available against the Rapids. Many national media members are now speculating this could mean Dempsey will not be called up for Oct. 11 and Oct. 15 qualifiers against Jamaica (home) and Panama (away), respectively. The roster will be unveiled this weekend.
In some other notes, defender Leo Gonzalez was still a possibility for traveling with the Sounders to Colorado. The left back is recovering from a hip/groin injury and the decision on his availability was yet to be made at the time of our interview.
“He went through more today than we expected,” said Schmid of Gonzalez. “He hadn’t felt as good on Thursday and felt better today.”
The coach also indicated goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann (flu) will be able to travel and that defender Djimi Traore (hamstring) was still ruled out.
Lastly, Schmid was asked if this could be the game we see Steve Zakuani‘s return from a long layoff due to sports hernia surgery. The midfielder hasn’t played since April 20.
“We’ll see,” Schmid said. “He’s been on the bench the last two games, and we were very close, I think, in the last game to putting him in, as well. He continues to make progress, so we’ll just see.”
