Sounders FC’s Eddie Johnson, Brad Evans called up by USMNT, not Clint Dempsey

US Centennial shield-01-1.jpgThe U.S. men’s national team announced its latest roster for World Cup qualifying on Sunday, and two Sounders were included in the group of 20: Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans. The U.S., which has already clinched a World Cup berth, will host Jamaica on Friday in Kansas City and travel to Panama on Oct. 15.

Clint Dempsey, the U.S. captain, was left out of the squad due to a hamstring injury that has forced him to miss the past three MLS games.

Johnson and Evans will likely miss Seattle’s next two games, a pair of Cascadia Cup bouts against Vancouver (at home Wednesday) and Portland (on the road Oct. 13). That will mean the Sounders will have lost 19 player-games to international duty this season.

Brad Evans (4)
Clint Dempsey (2)
Mario Martinez (2)
Obafemi Martins (1)
DeAndre Yedlin (1, U-20 World Cup)

USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann explained some of his decisions in a Q&A on the federation website, including some comments that indicate Evans’ remains the team’s No. 1 right back. Klinsmann also had this to say about Dempsey:

“For Clint, it is really important to pick up the rhythm, to get back into shape and play games. He needs to train very intensely and get as many sessions as possible. He had injury problems, the transfer was done late and he didn’t have a proper preseason, and he’s running behind. So he has to do some catching up and he will eventually get it done.”

Back to the Sounders, full strength continues to be an elusive topic. Perhaps they’ll get there for penultimate game of the year Oct. 19 at FC Dallas or maybe in the season finale Oct. 27 against the Galaxy.

Here is the full USMNT roster:

GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)
