There was a pretty impressive sight at Sounders FC practice Monday as the team returned to work. Five guys who weren’t available due to injury over the weekend were on the training field.
Here are some updates on those guys:
* * *
Clint Dempsey — The designated player wasn’t called up to the U.S. men’s national team amid the final stages of recovery from a hamstring injury. “We’ll see how Clint continues to develop this week,” coach Sigi Schmid said. “Every day (he does) a little bit more — a little bit more shooting and so forth. Today he feels really good. The progress has come along really well for him, so now we’ll see how he feels tomorrow. That will make a determination in regards to Wednesday, and then we’ll make our determination after Wednesday for Sunday. So it’s basically game by game. I think chances of him being able to start getting on the field improve as this week goes on.”
Obafemi Martins — The forward didn’t end up traveling to Colorado due to a groin injury that has been bothering him and required a cortisone shot early last week. Schmid described the issue as pubic symphysis, something you might remember bothered Nate Jaqua and Patrick Ianni for a while in years past. The coached added Martins “was still having some issues with it, but the rest over the weekend has helped settle that down. He said he felt pretty good. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow after the training today, and hopefully he’ll be able to go Wednesday.”
Djimi Traore — The veteran defender was ruled out of the Rapids game early in the week due to a hamstring injury suffered at home against New York. There had been some hope that he might be ready when the Whitecaps come to town, a need heightened by Zach Scott’s suspension. “Djimi did more today,” Schmid said. “We did some running with him at the end, so now it’s a case of how he feels tomorrow. He felt pretty good today about what he did.”
Leo Gonzalez — The left back has missed the last two games with a hip/groin issue. “Leo is feeling better each day,” Schmid said. “Is it enough for Wednesday? We’ll see. Is it enough for Sunday? Probably. He’s making good progress, and for him again it’s how does he feel tomorrow.”
Steve Zakuani — Schmid didn’t address this one specifically (I’ll try to get an update Tuesday), but it appeared, like Martins, he had a little setback late in the week. That was at least the indication when the coach was asked how Dylan Remick got in the 18, and Schmid said the rookie was always going to be involved, even with late scratches of Martins and Zakuani.
