Schmid: Clint Dempsey to suit up Wednesday; Obafemi Martins, Djimi Traore available

Forgive the brevity of this post, but a crazy thunderstorm rolled through the end of Sounders FC practice Tuesday. As such, reporters (and their recorders) could manage just about 60 seconds worth of updates from coach Sigi Schmid.

There was some significant injury news in that short span, though.

Djimi (Traore) came through yesterday all right and trained today, so we think he’s available for tomorrow,” Schmid said. “(Obafemi Martins), same thing: he came through and he’s available for us. Clint (Dempsey) will be in the 18 for us, as well.”

There was no update on defender Leo Gonzalez, so maybe Sunday at Portland is better suited for his return.

Schmid was also asked more specifically about Steve Zakuani and what kept the midfielder from being able to travel to Colorado.

“He just felt really tight in the same area in the groin, the same area that he had the surgery,” the coach said. “It just felt really tight and it wasn’t loosening up.”

To the point of considering shutting him down for the season?

“No, no,” Schmid said. “He went through training today and he’s trained this week, so we’ll see how he is.”
