Whitecaps jump into Cascadia Cup lead; Sounders must win Sunday in Portland

The Vancouver Whitecaps have jumped to the top of the Cascadia Cup standings with just a single game to play in this year’s edition of the regional tournament.

Portland has already been eliminated, and the only way to keep the Whitecaps from claiming the trophy is if the Sounders beat the Timbers on the road Sunday. Kickoff at Jeld-Wen Field is set for 6 p.m.

Vancouver hasn’t won the Cascadia Cup, a fan-sponsored competition, since 2008, meaning the team has never won it in its MLS era. Portland is the reigning trophy holder and Seattle had won the previous year.

Here is a look at the history:

Seattle: 2006, 2007, 2011
Vancouver: 2004, 2005, 2008
Portland: 2009, 2010, 2012

And here are updated standings, results and a schedule below:

Whitecaps — 2-1-3 (9 pts.), +4 GD, 13 goals scored
Sounders — 2-2-1 (7 pts.), -3 GD, six goals scored

Timbers — 0-1-4 (4 pts.), -1 GD, six goals scored
