Coach Sigi Schmid on the team’s goalkeeping situation as the team considers a change

As a follow-up to our chat with Sounders FC goalkeeper coach Tom Dutra, here is head coach Sigi Schmid on all matters goalkeeping following Friday’s practice:

*     *     *

(Have you made a decision regarding your starting goalkeeper for Sunday?) “No. It’s something we’ve talked this morning as a staff. Obviously we talked after the game, we talked yesterday and we talked today. We’ll talk a little more tomorrow and we’ll decide. As I said after the game, for us it’s important that we find our form, that we get ourselves together defensively. I think that’s important, and we’re evaluating everything in that regard.”

(Is this is decision simply about who gives you the best chance to win or is there more to it than that?) “There is never any decision that’s like that. The decision you make is what’s best for the team and the club. That’s how you make all your decisions.”

(Is this the first time in five years you’ve had a healthy No. 1 and No. 2 and are having to make a decision which is which?) “It might be, with a healthy 1 and 2, yeah.”

(Is it the soccer equivalent of a quarterback change where it takes on a life of its own among fans and locker room?) “No, I think it’s more a situation of, again, like I said to our team, are we a team that went 14 games undefeated at home or are we the team that’s taken two bad losses? Is Michael the goalkeeper who was averaging basically a goal against a game or is he the guy who’s taken nine goals in two games? I think he’s the guy who’s averaged a goal against a game. I think we’re a team that went 14 games undefeated at home. I think that’s the team we are … but it’s a matter of us finding our form again. Sometimes our form is off or we lose a bit of confidence, whatever the case may be. Sometimes you have to make a temporary move or temporary adjustment to deal with that.”

(Is is different making this decision now, right before the playoffs, than it would’ve been in April?) “It’s not April, so I’m not going to worry or speculate about that.”

(Do the traits you liked about Gspurning … confidence, experience … in being the guy to replace Keller also apply to how he deals with allowing nine goals and a possible benching?) “He does have all those traits. That’s the reason why we brought him in and that’s the reason he’s been our No. 1 goalkeeper and that’s the reason he’s played good games. Like I said, I don’t think it’s any reason to panic. We’re going to evaluate how we are right now — where we’re at, what’s the best decision for right now — but we haven’t lost faith or confidence or anything like that.”
