Sounders FC headed to South Carolina for preseason tournament in 2014

carolina cupUPDATE 2:01 p.m. — Here is coach Sigi Schmid after Friday’s practice: “Last year, we went to Tucson; it’s something different for the team going to Charleston. They asked us to come, and obviously we’ve got a couple players — Neagle and Caskey — who have played there, as well. They’ve got a couple of our guys who’ve played for us, an Amadou Sanyang and so forth, so there’s a relationship there. I think it’s not the worst place to be, South Carolina, at that time of year.”

The Sounders are set to participate in the Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, S.C., from Feb. 22 to March 1, 2014. They will compete against D.C. United, the Houston Dynamo and Charleston Battery of the third-tier USL PRO, which has hosted the annual round-robin tournament for 11 years.

It marks the first time Seattle has entered into this preseason competition; the team went to Arizona early this year for the Desert Diamond Cup.

Tickets go on sale on Nov. 11 (and more details are available here).

The Sounders, surprisingly, have a lot of South Carolina connection. Clint Dempsey played there at Furman University, and three other have featured for the Battery at some point: Osvaldo Alonso, Lamar Neagle and Alex Caskey.
