Sounders FC’s road woes continue

By nearly every measure, this will be Sounders FC’s worst road season. Sunday’s 1-0 defeat in Portland ensured it.

One away game still remains this regular season, Saturday at FC Dallas, but regardless of the result, Seattle will set low marks in road losses, points per game and goal differential.

It is worth noting that 17 points out of 16 away games is still among the top half of MLS teams this year. Plus, the Sounders have generally been one of the league’s best on the road since joining the league, so a high standard has been set.

Most notable, perhaps, is a 1-4 road record in the playoffs. Improve on that obviously and the regular season will be quickly forgotten.

Here is a year-by-year comparison on Sounders FC’s performance on the road:

*     *     *

Year Record Points PPG GD
2009 5-5-5 20 1.33 -2
2010 6-6-3 21 1.40 -1
2011 9-3-5 32 1.88 +7
2012 4-4-9 21 1.24 +2
2013 5-9-2 17 1.06 -12
