UPDATE 12:26 a.m. — Three of the scenarios the Sounders could have used to clinch a playoff berth did not happen. I’ve noted that below. The only way Seattle can do so this weekend is with a San Jose loss or tie Sunday against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
* * *
It’s Oct. 18, meaning it’s the latest in the year the Sounders have gone without having clinched a playoff berth.
Here is what that benchmark has been reached in seasons past:
Oct. 17, 2009 — at Kansas City, W 3-2
Oct. 9, 2010 — at Kansas City, W 2-1
Sept. 24, 2011 — at Vancouver, W 3-1
Sept. 29, 2012 — at Vancouver, T 0-0
Here is a reminder of what is needed to do that this weekend, otherwise it will go down the final week of the regular season.
1. Seattle beats FC Dallas on the road Saturday.
2. Colorado loses at home to Vancouver on Saturday.
3. San Jose either loses or ties against the Galaxy on the road Sunday.
4. Seattle ties against FC Dallas on Saturday AND Colorado ties against Vancouver on Saturday.
