Reign FC made a move Wednesday to bolster its midfield depth, acquiring Mariah Nogueira from the Boston Breakers in exchange third-round picks in the 2014 and 2015 NWSL college drafts.
Despite giving up on the No. 18 overall pick, Seattle will still draft at No. 9, 23 and 26 coming up in January.
Boston had drafted Nogueira with the 13th pick before this past season, and she appeared in 20 games (16 starts) and had three goals and one assist.
“I’m grateful for everything the Boston Breakers provided me in my first professional season and am excited for the new challenge and growth potential that Seattle offers,” Nogueira said in a team release. “I have confidence in and am honored to be able to work with Seattle Reign’s staff, players, and fans in building towards a successful season.”
Nogueira, 22, has history on the West Coast, having grown up in Westminster, Calif., and starting four years for Stanford.
Reign coach Laura Harvey said in the release that Nogueira will provide depth behind Jess Fishlock and Keelin Winters next season: “We saw the impact Mariah can make on a match, so we’re excited to add her to our squad as we seek to make significant improvements to the results we achieved last season.”
