There were a couple injury updates Wednesday outside of the normal day-to-day questions, and those involved the prospects of midfielders Steve Zakuani and Shalrie Joseph contributing again this season.
Zakuani has been dealing with pain stemming from sports hernia surgery earlier this year. It’s been an issue all season and one related to his long recovery from a broken leg and other complications. He was able to play earlier this month against the Timbers but suffered a setback.
“Steve Zakuani hasn’t really trained since the Portland game, saying that the injury is just such that he doesn’t feel he’s going to be able to come back this season,” said coach Sigi Schmid, “but we’re sitting down today and we’re going to talk about it in detail.”
Joseph has also been dealing with something all year — a troublesome calf injury that has come and gone since he signed before the season. That, at least, has shown some recent improvement.
“Shalrie has been able to do a little bit more,” Schmid said. “He’s not going to be ready for this weekend or possibly for a week from Wednesday, but maybe as the playoffs go deeper — you’re looking at some long breaks as you go further down the playoffs — there’s a good chance he might be able to come back.”
