Updated: A look at what the Sounders have to gain and lose Sunday

mls logo newUPDATE 9:39 p.m. Saturday — Portland beat Chivas USA, 5-0, on Saturday, so I’ve updated the scenarios again.

The Sounders could finish anywhere between first second third and fifth in the Western Conference after this week, the last in the MLS regular season. I’ve tried to compile some scenarios for where Seattle would end up based on Sunday’s home game against the Los Angeles Galaxy and other results.

Hopefully, I got this right…

*     *     *

If the Sounders LOSE to the Galaxy on Sunday, they will play in the play-in round vs. Colorado, Real Salt Lake or Portland…

— Seattle would host Colorado if the Rapids lose to Vancouver
— Seattle would play on the road with Rapids win/tie
— Game will likely be Oct. 30
— Winner advances to play No. 1 seed Portland in conference semifinals

If the Sounders TIE the Galaxy on Sunday, they will play in play-in round vs. either Colorado, Real Salt Lake or Galaxy…

— Seattle would face Galaxy if Rapids beat Vancouver
— Seattle would face Colorado if Rapids lose/tie against Vancouver
— Seattle would host Colorado
— Seattle would play on road against Galaxy
— Game will likely be Oct. 30
— Winner advances to play No. 1 seed Portland in conference semifinals (for Sounders, first leg at home likely on Nov. 2, second leg on road Nov. 6-7)

If the Sounders BEAT the Galaxy on Sunday, they will play in the conference semifinals against No. 2 seed Real Salt Lake, avoiding the play-in round…

— Seattle would finish third in the West
— The first leg would be at CenturyLink Field (likely Nov. 1-2), the second leg would be at Rio Tinto Stadium (Nov. 6-7)
