In a road game against Portland earlier this month, the Sounders wore black armbands in memory of Nicole Tranilla, the wife of assistant equipment manager Scott Tranilla, who died on October 11th of an unexpected ailment.
Eddie Johnson didn’t leave it there. He had the message, “R.I.P. Nicole”, under his jersey during Wednesday’s knockout round game against Colorado, and showed it after his goal and then again after the final whistle.
“As much as tonight was for the fans, I was doing it for Scott, whose wife passed away,” Johnson said. “My goal was to get this win for her.”
Wednesday marked Scott’s first game back with the team.
Johnson had also posted this message on his Instagram page earlier this month:
Had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Marie Tranilla last year, my first season with the Sounders, the wife of Scott Tranilla, who works for the Sounders organization and I’m (saddened) that her young life has come to a end. I will forever play my heart and soul out when I’m on the field in her remembrance and for her kids Makayla and Bryanah Tranilla bc (they’re a part) of the Sounders family and will always have a place in my heart #RIP #GoonTooSoon #GoneButNotForgotten #SeeYaWhenIGetThere #OneOfTheSaddestDays
