What makes the Sounders-Timbers rivalry so great?
Well, lots of things. But history probably leads the list.
These two cities have had soccer teams facing off since 1975 in the old North American Soccer League. Believe it or not, they actually met in the playoffs that very first year and didn’t again until almost 30 years later.
It took until 2004 and 2005 in the A-League and USL First Division, respectively, for the next postseason clashes.
Another eight years later and we’re back at it in MLS.
