First legs have not treated the Sounders well

UPDATE 11:35 p.m. — Might as well update this post. It’s relevant again.

The stat is a sobering reminder.

Sounders FC has been outscored, 9-1, in first leg of MLS playoff series. No wins. The team had a chance to reverse that slow-starting trend in Saturday’s opener in the Western Conference semifinals against Portland, but Seattle once again fell short.

It was a topic I covered in my preview story of the game.

“We have to make sure we take care of the first game appropriately,” coach Sigi Schmid said beforehand.

Instead, poor finishing and poor marking led to a 2-1 defeat. The Sounders now need to earn a win at Jeld-Wen Field in Thursday’s second leg. Not as easy as it sounds. Portland hasn’t lost at home since March, an 11-0-4 run.

Here is an updated chart:

*     *     *

Year and opponent First-leg result Aggregate result
2009 vs. Dynamo T, 0-0 (at home) L, 1-0
2010 vs. Galaxy L, 1-0 (at home) L, 3-1
2011 vs. Real Salt Lake L, 3-0 (on road) L, 3-2
2012 vs. Real Salt Lake T, 0-0 (at home) W, 1-0
2012 vs. Galaxy L, 3-0 (on road) L, 4-2
2013 vs. Portland L, 2-1 (at home) TBD
