GM Adrian Hanauer on an offseason loan for Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson’s future

Monday was a busy day as it came to a conference call with Adrian Hanauer, Sounders FC general manager and part owner, but I was afforded the chance to ask him a few extra questions afterward.

Here is a quick transcript of that chat:

Jurgen Klinsmann has mentioned that he’d like MLS players in the USMNT pool to pursue offseason loans to keep active leading into a World Cup year. How do you see that affecting your U.S. internationals, particularly Clint Dempsey?

“Clint has something in his contract that allows him to go (on loan) once during his contract, which obviously was intended for this offseason prior to the World Cup. So his agent and he are kind of keeping me in the loop, and we’re sort of working on that. I can’t say for sure whether something will happen or not, but we won’t be surprised if that happens. The other guys, I think we’d be open to it, but there’s nothing imminent.”

Eddie Johnson was a guy who didn’t come up much during the conference call. How would you assess his potential future with this team?

“Just like with every guy, we’re not really going to talk about specifics. Eddie’s gone now with the national team, but when he gets back, we’ll sit down and talk about the past year and talk about the future. He has one more option year, and I think I’ve been made pretty aware that that’s probably not a salary that he wants to play at. But he does have that option year.”

How firm is the hope of having resolution of your coaching question in the next couple weeks?

“I don’t want to pigeonhole myself too much, but yeah, by that time we should be starting to focus our attention away from a review of the last year and more into a preview of the next year.”

Does the single-entity structure of MLS change at all or have any effect on the way you are able to potentially pursue other coaches if it gets to that?

“I think if you’re in the NFL, you need permission to talk to somebody else’s coach also, so the single-entity piece doesn’t really have that much to do with it. It’s just if you’re going to replace a coach, you have to go through he appropriate channels and the process is like any other professional sports league.”
