UW earns No. 2 seed in NCAA tournament; Seattle U. to face Creighton in first round

college cupTwo local college teams have made the NCAA men’s soccer tournament, and you don’t need to look long at the bracket released Monday to see the University of Washington and Seattle University could face off rather quickly.

The Huskies earned the No. 2 overall seed in the 48-team field after clinching their first conference title since 2000. UW had beaten Oregon State on Sunday to win the Pac-12 championship in a loaded year that saw UCLA (No. 1) and Cal (No. 4) among the top seeds, as well.

Also in the mix is Seattle University, which backed up its regular-season title in the Western Athletic Conference by winning the tournament championship with a 2-1 comeback win Sunday against San Jose State in the final. The Redhawks face Creighton on the road in the first round Thursday and the winner advances to play Washington in the second round Sunday.

Gonzaga was one of the last teams out of the men’s field.

On the women’s side, the Seattle U. women had their great season come to an end in the NCAA tournament last week with a 2-0 loss in the first round to No. 3 seed Portland.
