Steve Zakuani, Mauro Rosales among those made available in MLS Re-Entry Draft

mls logo newMLS has released the list of players available in the upcoming Re-Entry Draft, and it included some notable Sounders.

The five players from Seattle who will be involved are Steve Zakuani, Mauro Rosales, Marc Burch, Josh Ford and Blair Gavin. Zakuani was out of contract, as his rookie deal had expired without an extension, and the team declined the options on the other four.

Team can still re-sign their eligible players, or the players can elect to opt out, by 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The first stage of the draft is Thursday, when teams have to pay the option price or make a bona fide offer. Typically, there is little action here.

The second stage is Dec. 18, when teams can freely negotiate new deals, resulting in more action. Players not selected become free agents.

Following the declined option of goalkeeper Michael Gspurning, Zakuani and Rosales are a couple more fan-favorites potentially on the way out. Zakuani was one of six remaining “original” Sounders from the start of the 2009 season and Rosales is the team’s co-leader in assists with 34.
