Sounders FC will host Tottenham of the English Premier League in July 19 friendly

tottenham-hotspur-logoThere is always some suspense surrounding an expected opponent in an international friendly.

The wait for Sounders FC fans ended Monday as the team announced it will host Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League in a July 19 exhibition at CenturyLink Field.

The friendly is included in season-ticket packages for next season. Game tickets go on sale March 10, but you can guarantee a seat before that date buy purchasing half-season ticket packages.

This will be Tottenham’s third tour to the U.S. in five seasons, and this trip also includes a July 26 friendly at Chicago. There will be events in anticipation of both games.

The Spurs, founded in 1882, are currently seventh in the EPL table, tied with Manchester United on points. Sounders star Clint Dempsey played for the club for the 2012-13 season and Kasey Keller played there from 2001 to 2005.

Reminder: It is a World Cup year, and the game is scheduled six days after the final, so some of the stars (from both teams) might not be available.

Here are some quotes from the news release:

“Tottenham Hotspur has established themselves as one of the top teams in arguably the toughest league in the world. We are proud to have them be a part of this year’s friendly and will continue to strive to bring the strongest competition to CenturyLink Field.” — Adrian Hanauer, Sounders FC owner and general manager

“Preseason preparations are always key ahead of a new campaign. We all know that the US has first-class facilities, while Major League Soccer is growing each year. The MLS opposition we face will be in the middle of their seasons and playing in their home stadiums so we can expect strong tests from both Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire. The Club is rightfully proud of its large and growing fan base in the States and we look forward to meeting with as many of our loyal fans from across the country as we can.” — Tim Sherwood, Tottenham head coach

No word on if Coach Lasso will be part of the tour.

What do you make of Tottenham being the friendly opponent?
